Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is the Caterpillar Chrysalis Carousel?

The Caterpillar Chrysalis Carousel is a clear, sturdy butterfly enclosure that makes it easy and fun to watch caterpillars grow and turn into butterflies. It’s simple to use, easy to clean, and keeps caterpillars safe from predators.

How do I set it up?

Your Carousel requires light assembly. Follow the setup instructions available under the Care section on the About tab of our website. Once assembled, place it on a flat surface with good light (not direct sun), add fresh host plant leaves, and gently place your caterpillars inside.

Is it reusable?

Yes! After each butterfly release, clean it and it’s ready to use again for the next group.

How many caterpillars can I raise at once?

We recommend no more than eight caterpillars at a time. This gives them space to grow and form chrysalides safely.

Can I use it indoors or outdoors?

You can use the Carousel indoors or outdoors as long as it’s not in direct sunlight. Covered porches or shaded areas work well, as long as the space has good light and protection from wind or rain. Avoid placing it directly on the ground to keep ants and other insects out.

Is it safe for kids?

Yes! The Carousel is perfect for families and classrooms. Adult supervision is recommended when handling caterpillars or releasing butterflies.

Caring for Caterpillars

Where can I find caterpillars?

Look at host plants where butterflies lay eggs:

• Monarchs → Milkweed

• Swallowtails → Parsley, fennel, citrus leaves

• Painted Ladies → Thistle, hollyhock

Avoid areas sprayed with pesticides.

Where can I get host plants?

Local nurseries, garden centers, or native plant groups often have them. You can also find pesticide-free options online.

How often should I feed them?

Caterpillars eat a lot! Add fresh leaves every day and remove old ones to keep the Carousel clean.

How do I clean the Carousel?

Remove old leaves and caterpillar frass (waste) daily to keep it clean. After releasing your butterflies, take out any remaining leaves or chrysalides. Wipe the inside with mild soap and warm water, then dry it with a towel or let it air dry completely.

What if I see mold or condensation?

Caterpillars shed their skin several times as they grow—usually about five times, in stages called instars. They may stop eating, stay still, or turn darker right before molting, which is completely normal. After their final molt, they will form a chrysalis. If a caterpillar looks unhealthy or does not move for a long time, remove it from the others just in case.

Butterfly Education & Awareness

How long does it take?

The full butterfly life cycle usually takes about 3–4 weeks, depending on the species and temperature. On average:

• Egg → 3–5 days

• Caterpillar → 10–14 days

• Chrysalis → 7–10 days

When should I release my butterflies?

After emerging, butterflies need to hang upside down for a few hours to pump and dry their wings. Let them rest for 2–4 hours before releasing. Choose a warm, sunny day with little wind, and release them near flowers or host plants where they can find food and shelter.

Will they stay nearby?

Some may stay if there are flowers or host plants close by. Others will fly off to continue the butterfly life cycle.

Butterfly Metamorphosis

Why are butterflies important?

Butterflies help pollinate plants and are an important part of a healthy environment. Many species are in decline due to habitat loss and pesticides, so creating safe spaces for them to grow and thrive makes a difference.

How does the Carousel help?

The Carousel offers a safe, easy way to observe the butterfly life cycle up close. It encourages learning, curiosity, and care for pollinators while supporting awareness of conservation and healthy habitats.

Can I use it for classrooms or homeschool?

Yes! It’s great for hands-on S.T.E.M. learning, science projects, and nature lessons. It helps students explore biology and environmental science in a fun, interactive way.

Do you offer discounts for schools or groups?

Yes! We love supporting education. Contact us at [email protected] for school or group discounts.

Can I observe butterflies year-round?

It depends on where you live. In warmer places like Hawaiʻi, butterflies can often be seen year-round. In cooler mainland areas, most butterflies are seasonal and active during spring and summer.
