How to Care for Your CCC

Regular cleaning between uses helps prevent mold, bacteria, and disease.

Follow these steps for a safe, thorough clean:

What You'll Need

• Mild bleach solution

• Soft cloth or sponge

• Small brush or toothbrush (optional

for deep cleaning crevices)

• Clean rinse water

• Dry towel or drying rack

1. Disassemble the Carousel

Gently detach the clear cover, carousel branches, and central column from the base.

Remove any frass (caterpillar droppings) or residue before cleaning.

2. Clean the Carousel Branches, Branch Holders, Branch Cap, and Orange Cone

Submerge these parts in the bleach solution.

Scrub lightly with a cloth or brush to remove any residue.

Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Allow to air dry on a clean towel or drying rack.

3. Clean the Bowl

Avoid submerging the bowl.

Pour the bleach solution into the bottom section and gently swish it around.

Use a cloth or sponge to wipe down the inside thoroughly.

Rinse out with clean water and let air dry completely.

4. Clean the Clear Cover

Use a soft cloth or sponge only. Abrasive materials will scratch the surface.

Dip the cloth in the bleach solution and gently wipe the entire inside and outside.

Rinse cloth with clean water and wipe again to remove any bleach residue.

Dry with a soft towel or allow to air dry.

5. Reassemble Only When Completely Dry

Make sure all parts are completely dry before reassembling or storing to prevent mold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find caterpillars?

Look at host plants where butterflies lay eggs:

• Monarchs → Milkweed

• Swallowtails → Parsley, fennel, citrus leaves

• Painted Ladies → Thistle, hollyhock

Avoid areas sprayed with pesticides.

Where can I get host plants?

Local nurseries, garden centers, or native plant groups often have them. You can also find pesticide-free options online.

How often should I feed them?

Caterpillars eat a lot! Add fresh leaves every day and remove old ones to keep the Carousel clean.

How do I clean the Carousel?

Remove old leaves and caterpillar frass (waste) daily to keep it clean. After releasing your butterflies, take out any remaining leaves or chrysalides. Wipe the inside with mild soap and warm water, then dry it with a towel or let it air dry completely.

What if I see mold or condensation?

Wipe the inside dry and remove any moldy leaves. Keep the Carousel in a cool, dry spot with good airflow. Daily clean-up helps prevent moisture and mold from building up.

Why did my caterpillar stop eating or turn dark?

Caterpillars shed their skin several times as they grow—usually about five times, in stages called instars. They may stop eating, stay still, or turn darker right before molting, which is completely normal. After their final molt, they will form a chrysalis. If a caterpillar looks unhealthy or does not move for a long time, remove it from the others just in case.
